THE AREA
Walking
Walking through the tori arch and slowly through our forest is a feature at Monalea. You end up in the ancient orchard on the far side of the grounds or for a shorter option you can emerge in the gardens in front of the farmhouse. There are lots of walks in the area, locally you can walk from the barn up Croghan mountain, a perfect peak with views from the top over the sea to the east and the rolling hills of Wexford and Wicklow to the west.
Ballyfad forest walk is a 10 min drive from the house where there’s a trail through a forest without too many inclines. The southern start point of the Wicklow Way is nearby at Clonegal, Co Carlow and there are many more hikes in the south Wicklow mountains.
Beaches
Long beach walks along the coast are 15/20 minutes drive from the barn.We like Toberpatrick, Ballymoney and Clones strand, all have long stretches of uninterrupted sandy beach where you might see a seal popping his head out of the waves.
Golf
Coollattin golf club is 20 minutes west of Monalea and Ballymoney golf club is a coastal 18 hole course, both beautifully situated.
There’s lots more to do and see in this beautiful area, there’s a lavender farm in Coolnagloose, a kid’s activity farm, a seal rescue centre, kayaking near Courtown, horseriding, pitch and put and a spa hotel.
Pubs and dining out
The Gap pub
You can hike over the hill behind the barn and end up in this cosy pub with dogs in baskets in front of stoves. If you call in advance they’ll put pizzas in the oven (they do a pizza/pint deal) and if you’re tired they can deliver you back to the barn in their minivan.
Nolan’s pub
For pints, crisps, darts and sporting events on tv in front of the fire, Nolan’s pub is your only man, about 10 minute’s drive from the barn.
The Duck restaurant at Marlfield House
This is the casual dining restaurant in beautiful Marlfield house stables. Great food, about a 15 minute drive from the barn, very popular so wise to book in advance. The house itself has a high end restaurant for special occasions.
Macreddin village and the Strawberry Tree
Beside Aughrim, The Strawberry tree restaurant is fully organic and lists the local suppliers they use, a delicious seasonal menu that changes year round. There is also a a farmers market here the first Sunday of every month April – October. 20 minute drive from the barn.
